Description

I have been a collector of vinyl now for over 20 years and have put together an extensive collection spanning the decades. During this time I have acquired several duplicates, but have as yet not attempted to sell too many of them.

In describing this album, I will give detailed information and an honest, in depth evaluation of the condition and quality throughout, so forgive me if my summation appears particularly meticulous! I will gladly answer any questions or queries should there be any.

The Sleeve

Front surface - The surface is visually excellent, no stains markings, scratches etc. There is some slight wear to top and bottom edges and corners, not too bad really. The newspaper that appears on the album cover is the Chicago Daily Tribune edition from 1948 which incorrectly reported the result of the US Presidential Election as 'Dewey Defeats Truman' (spelt 'Dewei' on the cover). The Tribune refused permission to use the edtion hence the rapid withdrawal of this sleeve and subsequent reissue with the blanked newspaper edition. Also missing from later pressings were the names of 'Lee' and 'Peart' from the advertisng billboards above the buildings on the right hand side of the sleeve. For some reason only the name of 'Lifeson' remains printed on later pressings in totally differently signature form from this 1st edition. These band names ommissions have not been widely noticed over the years but I think that it makes this rare 1st press all the more intrigueing and collectable for it.

Rear Surface - This mirrors the front cover in terms of excellence with again no stains markings, scratches etc. There is only minimal wear visible, again towards the top and bottom edge and corners. The opening is not feathered at all.

The Spine – Well presented, no splits, tears etc. Minimal wear visible.

Side 1 - The label is in very nice condition showing only very light spindle wear. The vinyl is virtually unmarked barring one or two very, very light marks when viewed in strong light. Play is almost perfect - just one light click at the end of the side.

Side 2 - The label is equally as good as that of side 1, the vinyl again shows only one or two very light marks, and once again play is almost perfect - slight light crackle at the start of track 2 and a few light crackles later in the track. Also unique to this very 1st press was the mis credit on the label notes "Lyrics by Neil Peart except 'Between Us' by Geddy Lee". This credit should have referenced track 2 'Different Strings' and indeed was correctly printed on later pressings. Again not a widely noticed error.

In general, the audible and visual qualities of both sides are excellent and really have to be seen and heard to be truly appreciated.

The Lyric Sleeve

This lyric sleeve is in superb shape. It is very clean and has very minimal wear. This inner was not used to store the vinyl in. The paper used for this inner was much thinner than the thicker card type used on later pressings. Also, copyright and publishing credits were listed to CORE Music Publishing, Phonogram and Cat Productions Ltd with the 'Marketed by Phonogram' logo. These credits were shortened to just CORE Music Publishing with the Mercury logo on later pressings. The vinyl is kept in a lined "Made in England" die cut inner which I think is how this album was first sold??

Summary

This original genuine first press packed with rarities is generally in superb condition. I would happily say that this is a wonderful copy of a much sought after Rush recording that would grace any serious collectors cabinet. Not only is it sought after for the deletions and mis credit but the music is ground breakingly fantastic, too!!

This summation is as genuine and as detailed as I could possibly have made it. I know if I was buying that this is the kind of information that I would like to see. I have played this album only once on high quality audio equipment since acquiring it a several months ago after which it has been sealed up.
