Description

Baron Elmo proudly presents a rare vinyl document of avant-electronic music from women, a split LP from RUTH ANDERSON and ANNEA LOCKWOOD with the unwieldy title Dump; SUM (State Of The Union Message) / Tiger Balm, issued sometime in the Seventies by the crucially important Opus One label. This album features three amazing experimental works that still sound amazingly fresh and vital today. Both the Ruth Anderson pieces, "SUM (State of the Union Message)" and "Dump" are composed primarily of sounds found in the media environment. The composer describes “Dump” as "a collage of folk songs, pop tunes and electronically generated 'dump sounds' to form a social commentary from World War 1 through the sixties", while “SUM” dismembers a Richard Nixon State of the Union speech, adorning Tricky Dick's spiel with sound-hits from TV commercials of the day. In these pre-sampling days, such audio collages could only be realized through long, tedious hours of tape editing and splicing. Annea Lockwood's delightful “Tiger Balm,” approaches found-sound manipulation from another angle, using the highly amplified sound of a purring cat as the foundation of the piece, garnished with other sounds that Lockwood regarded as “highly sensual”: a beating heart, a tiger, gongs, a woman's voice and more. A gorgeous screened cover with notes from both composers completes the package. All in all, a provocative and entertaining album for fans of envelope-pushing audio. This LP has been out of print for many years and has never been issued on CD. Every part of this package in in tip-top shape; it was purchased new by Baron Elmo himself and treated with tender loving care.
