This handsome and very rare LP from Westminster (WL 50-11, US pressing, green/silver label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features Peter Rybar's deeply poetic account of Josef Suk's extraordinary Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra Op. 24, recorded in the rich acoustics of the Grossersaal of the Musikverein Vienna on 6 January 1950 with Henry Swoboda conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Although there exists an earlier 'live' account with violinist Carl Flesch (on a Symposium CD set), I believe this was the Suk Fantasy's first commercial recording and Rybar plays with breathtakingly rapt beauty.

Filling out the disc is Swoboda and the VSO's equally compelling rendition of Bedrich Smetana's symphonic poem "Wallenstein's Camp" Op. 14, set down during this same recording session. I believe this was the work's only second recording, after Rafael Kubelik's 1943 Ultraphon account with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Not unlike Hans Swarowsky and Rudolf Moralt, Swoboda was a superb conductor whose legacy warrants re-issue on CD.

Incidentally, the liner notes on the reverse are written by Nicolas Slonimsky.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a small 1/2” seamsplit to the lower-right corner, edgewear, slight bumping at corners, and a bit of writing to the rear panel. However, there are no bends, seamsplits, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring flawless or NM surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
