Totally cool J-Pop smoothie from the '80s, with just the right twist of weird stirred into the proceedings. Top-notch stuff, with a beautiful Pink Floyd cover thrown in for good measure (Syd-period Floyd at that - ain't none better). Obi strip present and correct. 01. Voyager of the Beagle 02. "This obscure Japanese album starts with "Voyager Of The Beagle", which features a kind of synth-pop garnished with lounge gloss, dreamy fuzz, and kitsch playfulness, predating both Stereolab and AIR. "Awaiting Manana" also borrows from ethnic, marching hymns and childish ditties. "Bitter Spring" is by definition a miniature fairy-tale environment, built around expressionist concrete arrangements, and having the kind of psychological impact that, say, CocoRosie would. In the meantime, "Moving On" veers into kitsch easy-listening and primitive electro flavours. Ditto for "Voice From Tangier", whose beats are quite unique, as are those in "Past Glories". The cover of Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" is more indicative of their sound than it would seem at first. As such, Salon Music's musical route can be traced back to Pink Floyd's early psychedelic fairy-tales, the conceptual easy-listening of Serge Gainsbourg, and the most excessive disco kitsch. All this might sound not special, but in fact it predates trends that would surface in indie-rock by about a decade."
