Yes, folks, we are BLATANTLY, SHAMELESSLY PARTIAL when it comes to SAM COOKE !!!

Call this a labor of love, if you will: advertising the music and the vibrant, joyful voice of my all- time favorite singer - and spreading the Sam Cooke gospel in the process !!! That's heaven to me, indeed.

Sam Cooke was the greatest American singer of all times, hands down; no ifs, ands or buts. Respectfully, the fans of Enrico Caruso, Frankie Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat "King" Cole or Billy Ecstine can take their case elsewhere - my judgment is final (and also shared by such an authority as Jerry Wexler, legendary Atlantic A&R man, who once famously declared that Sam Cooke was a "perfect" singer, who "had it all"). In an unlikely event that you are totally unfamiliar with Sam's music, this is his FIRST studio album, recorded for KEEN label in 1957. Sam croons his way through 12 originals, as well as crossover and pop standards. Make no mistake: material here may be pop, but the voice is pure Rhythm & Blues!!! Sam Cooke could sing a mattress label and still come across as the most heavenly voice of ‘em all. This is an embarrassment of the riches of the American vocal artistry; Crooning raised to the level of aesthetic and philosophical principle. If the human voice had a weight, Sam Cooke’s voice would have been worth its weight in gold. Absolutely indispensible!!!

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)             Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5 (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a TINY piece of transparent scotch tape (less than an inch in length)

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 2 and 4 inches / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No writing

-         No stamps

-         No peel-off marks

-         No stains

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
