Description
Quite simply one of the best albums ever made, a perfect synthesis of atmosphere, talent, interpretation and mood. The song choices are out of this world, too. This album represented part of a vital transition for the brilliant Cooke--from popular hitmaker to an acknowledged artistic genius and a legendary performer. It hurts that he died, tragically, far too young. This beautiful, soulful, classic midnight album is a testament to everything he was.
This is a prime original copy from the first US pressing run, on RCA Victor, in stereo. We play tested it and it plays perfectly (see rating notes above.)
From the album's liner notes:
"It was just past closing time when we dropped into the club to talk with Sam Cooke that night. "Mr. Soul" was singing for himself and for the small group of musicians who accompanied him . Standing to the rear of the club, we watched the young singer--tie off, jacket slung on a cane-backed chair--settle into a mood. We heard him sing through the smoky after-hours haze. The night's work was done. This was for the pure pleasure of performing. Sam's tones were a little more blue than we'd heard before. His choice of songs more than right for the hour and atmosphere. One song, two songs, and then even the waiters, busy with get-home chores, stopped work to listen. One by one they paused for a cigarette, pulled up a chair. Conversation slowed and ceased.
What we witnessed that night was not a performance in the accepted sense. The effort had al of Sam's artistry and style, bu tthere was something more intense and personal about it. Actually, we were eavesdropping on a top singer in those dark hours. We'd talked several times with Sam about recording him with a small group. We knew it would be right and that night at the club settled it. The trick, however, was to snare the mood and capture the atmosphere for the album.
This, we know, is it.
It's just past closing time and Sam is singing for himself. There's an empty table right over there. Welcome to Night Beat."
