·       SAM COOKE - NIGHTBEAT - ORIGINAL 1963 RCA VICTOR MONO LP LPM-2709

·       If this is of any relevance – and we do not claim that it is – we feel this is the greatest American album ever recorded, in any genre, by any artist. Certainly, it has been on top of our personal top-10 list for the past 20 years, and is in no danger of ever being “overthrowned” by any other album or artist.

Aaaah…call this a labor of love, if you will: advertising the music and the vibrant, joyful voice of my all- time favorite singer - and spreading the Sam Cooke gospel in the process !!! That's heaven to me, indeed. Sam Cooke was the greatest American singer of all times, hands down; no ifs, ands or buts. Respectfully, the fans of Enrico Caruso, Frankie Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat "King" Cole or Billy Ecstine can take their case elsewhere - my judgment is final (and also shared by such an authority as Jerry Wexler, legendary Atlantic A&R man, who - to paraphrase his words - proclaimed that Sam Cooke was a "perfect" singer, who "had it all"). In an unlikely event that you are totally unfamiliar with Sam's music, this is the fifth album he recorded for RCA Victor, in 1963. Sam croons his way through 11 blues, gospel and soul numbers by Charles Brown, Bessie Smith, Howlin' Wolf, Joe Turner plus some originals (of which "Lost and Lookin" is probably the very finest Sam Cooke ballad he ever penned - it has to be heard to be believed), with a small blues combo comprising of unbelievably competent musicians. This is an embarrassment of the riches of the American vocal artistry; Crooning raised to the level of aesthetic and philosophical principle. Absolutely critical and indispensable work in just about every respect !!! Track listing: Nobody knows the trouble I've seen - Lost and lookin' - Mean old world - Please don't drive me away - I lost everything - Get yourself another fool - Little red rooster - Laughin' and clownin' - Trouble blues - You gotta move - Fool's paradise - Shake, rattle and roll.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were routinely distributed among the radio stations before the LP was released to the public, sometimes as much as 4 months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted below, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the normal room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            WE GRADE THE RECORD AS BORDERLINE NEAR MINT. This means that we are hesitant to grade the vinyl as NEAR MINT. The condition of this item is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. At our own risk, we will grade vinyl as NEAR MINT, but be forewarned: if you are rigorous and demanding collector, this album may be VG++ for your standards, or below your expectations. Some light abrasions and sleeve scuffs are visible, but are probably not sufficient to significantly subtract from the overall near mint grade. Please inquire if you are in doubt.

(b)            The record comes in its original stock inner sleeve, which the label was using for their titles around the time this album came out.

(c)             The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the perimeter of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings)

(d)            The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the very first pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, exceedingly vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from your compact disc!

(e)             PLEASE NOTE: This - of course - is an ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(f)              Mono pressing of this title is somewhat rarer than its stereo counterpart. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 2:1.

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         The cover has an unseemly 1-inch wide, 10-inch long (5 inches on each side) piece of packaging tape along the bottom seam (NOTE: THERE ARE NO SPLIT SEAMS ON THE COVER). Part of the tape has been (unsuccessfully) peeled off, leaving a visible ¾-square inch peel-off mark in the lower left corner of the front cover (not shown on our scan). The tape has some writing on it (the tape, not the cover itself).

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some light "friction" dirt/dust spots, probably from rubbing against other record covers. While we did not want to tinker with the integrity of the cover, these spots can easily be cleaned by the buyer by using a mild cleaner or plain eraser.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No split seams

-         No cut-out holes

-         No cut-out corners

-         No drill marks or indents

-         No stains

-         No yellowing from age

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No wrinkles/creases

-         No razor marks

-         No pressure marks, lines, streaks, or razor cuts.

-         No stamps

-         No warping

-         No glue traces or wax residue.

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
