This album is a genuine anomaly: it's made up of the six singles that they cut in 1962/63 for Roulette before they went to Stax and got known nationally by way of Atlantic Records.. The duo first hooked up in 1961, and it was after being booked locally as Sam & Dave in Miami, and cutting one locally released single that they came to the attention of Morris Levy in New York, who owned Roulette. The gospel influence (especially the organ) runs through much of what's here, and one can also pick out elements of Sam Cooke's stock vocal embellishments (check out "No More Pain"). The best numbers here are the achingly beautiful "It Was So Nice While It Lasted," one of the finest love songs in the duo's early output, "No More Pain," a towering performance by both singers, and "I Got a Thing Going On," which manages to sum up their formative sound, touching on all of their influences and pointing the way toward mid-1960s soul. As with their later material on Atlantic, the duo know how to get the listener's heart pumping and foot tapping, as on "Keep A Walkin'," "You Ain't No Big Thing Baby," and "I Found Out," the latter a powerful, exciting dance number. Some of it doesn't quite work -- "Listening for My Name" needed work as a song, although the singing on the break soars past the limitations in the piece and the arrangement. The stuff here is among the rarest of the duo's work, having only reappeared once on an extremely obscure Roulette album.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER
THE COVER IS STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP; HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG++
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- A faint water stain affects the area about 1/2 inch wide along the bottom seam (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) ; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible and has caused a slight warp in the affected area and a few tiny mold spots (which we believe can be easily cleaned up after the shrink wrap is removed) .
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 3 (back side)
- Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
- Cover has a few minor wrinkles (bubbles in paper slick) on the back panel
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No writing
- No stamps
- No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams
- No peel-off marks
- No stickers or labels
- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No glue traces or wax residue.
- No bar codes
- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
