Sleeve Condition: Rubbed at edges, textured sleeve showing a little wear. Vg+.

Record Condition: Looks very poorly looked after with numerous scuffs and scratches. In fact, although there is noticeable surface noise, in places and audible evidence of poor handling, the record actually plays OK with no distortion to the music. I have played it through both sides and it plays Vg-. Visually it is only Fair to Good though and potential bidders should only bid with this that in mind.

For all that, a rare record and very, very hard to find now.

Back Door Man Sam Gopal is a Malaysian musician who gained cult attention in the late 60s by combining acid-addled grooves with the tabla, his instrument of choice. His band, featuring future Hawkwind and Motörhead legend Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister and later Jefferson Starship bassist Pete Sears, released this now super-collectable LP in 1968 for the Stable imprint before splitting.

It’s subtle, trance-like music, with the focus on Gopal’s tabla instead of a conventional drummer. Had the album featured, say a Keith Moon-alike drum animal, the nuances of Lemmy’s not-yet-shredded vocals and Sears’ drone bass would have been drowned out.

If you need a quick aid to visualising the patchouli whiff that pervaded London at the time, play Grass or The Sky Is Burning. It’s powerful stuff to this day, despite a clanky old production and the small matter of Lemmy failing to hit most of the notes. As the great man told RC in 1999, “I wrote that album on methedrine,” and you can’t help but believe him.
