PALE FIRE from San Diego, Ca U.S.A.
Pale Fire appears on the same indie label, Feather, as another San Diego area band of the times, The Lyrics. Arranger Don Ralke receives credits on records for both bands. Only two Pale Fire singles are known; "Back Home" is the flip of "Ups and Downs". The other Pale Fire 45 pairs "Never Hurt Again" with "Eye Girl".
This San Diego foursome was previously known as the Survivors and then the Five Pound Grin. Members included David Doran (vocals, guitar), Malcolm McCassy (vocals, bass), Mike Lawson (vocals, guitar) and Willie Kellogg (drums). The band issued two 45s in 1968 as Pale Fire with the excellent 'Never Hurt Again' gracing the A-side of the first. This song, written by Doran and McCassy, was originally recorded as a demo by the Five Pound Grin and can be found on the psych compilation CD 'The Incredible Expanding Universe Of Brain Shadows, Volumes One & Two'. The Pale Fire version is a much better, fined tuned take however, with nicely added brass instrumentation.
