On offer is the 1971 LP by SANDY DENNY called THE NORTH STAR GRASSMAN AND THE RAVENS on the Island Records, catalogue number ILPS 9165.
The solo debut proper of Sandy Denny is her masterpiece, and an indispensable item in anybody’s collection. It was a commercial disappointment on release, it seems. Perhaps her own songs – and, bar the traditional ‘Blackwaterside’, a Dylan cover, ‘Down in the Flood’, and a Brenda Lee rocker, ‘Let’s Jump the Broomstick’, it is all her own songs – were just a little too brooding and dark for popular taste in 1971. But the visionary ‘Late November’ and the enigmatic, euphoric ‘The Sea Captain’, the ominous title track, to say nothing of slacker apology ‘Crazy Lady Blues’, are undoubtedly the most inspired of her troubled life. Sterling contributions from Richard Thompson too, who co-produced after Joe Boyd decamped to make movies in the USA.
This is the original 1971 pressing. The vinyl is in Excellent condition with two hairlines on side 1, which don’t affect audio quality. There’s very little spindle-wear and no writing on the labels. The gatefold cover, always distinguished by the thick cardboard and wide spine, is Excellent too, with some mild, unobtrusive speckling from age and the tiniest of tears on the bottom of the spine (see picture). No ringwear and no general wear and tear.
