Description
This is a fine copy on red vinyl from a rare and somewhat mysterious 1970s pressing, presumably 1973, of a live 1969 performance by Santana. This copy comes in a textured pale yellow jacket with the group name and title printed in purple on the front cover, and a gold sticker with the label name and an image of a pig above them. It comes with a green one-sided insert (pictured), which in sealed copies I've seen on the Popsike site was placed over the front cover rather than inside the jacket. The insert lists the tracks on the record, and the 4-73 date in the artist's signature is the basis for believing that the record was released around then. There is no catalog number for the record on either the jacket, the insert, or the disc labels (the disc runout etching S-117 is often given as the catalog number). This copy is on red vinyl, but both blue and black vinyl copies were also issued. As for the music itself, it is from a good bootleg quality recording, and showcases the early band in a fiery performance. Half the tracks appeared on their debut LP, while the others, including a cover of NYC Latin percussionist Willie Bobo's "Fried Neckbones," were staples of their live repertoire at the time. (NB: The group's early single "Evil Ways" was also a Bobo song.)
Now to describe the artifact:
The jacket has ring wear and staining; mostly light corner, spine, and seam wear; and a small gouge on the front cover (see photo) (EX-). The disc is clean with some light scraping and scuffing, and plays with occasional light surface noise (EX+). The insert is in fine (M-) condition.
I’m in the process of selling off a large personal collection amassed over two decades. All discs have been stored in plastic lined inner sleeves separate from their jackets. The jackets have been stored in plastic sleeves. I have play graded (spot checked) discs except where otherwise noted.
