Albums housed in die-cut inners with Santana Lotus logos on each. SQ matrix quadraphonic sound. Recorded Live July 3 & 4, 1973, in Osaka Japan. This appreciation of the album was taken from the WWW Many thanks to Eduard.Regarded as a holy relic by Santana fans, “Lotus” stands as a touchstone in the career of the band. It’s a document in the transition of Santana from a Latin Rock band to a Fusion/Prog/Jazz outfit. This is the period where Carlos began immersing himself in to Indian mysticism and religion. Recorded live in 1973 in Osaka, Japan, between Caravanserai and Welcome, “Lotus” highlights the “New Santana Band” (superb drummer Michael Shrieve and Jose Chepito Areas being the lone original members), of whom keyboardists Tom Coster and Richard Kermode (fresh from Malo) were prominent members along with featured singer Leon Thomas. Not that you hear much from Thomas here, as almost all of these 22 tracks are instrumentals, enabling the band to stretch out with some blistering performances and enchanting experimentations, the best of which can be found on stunning extended epics such as “Every Step Of The Way,” “Incident At Neshabur,” “Samba Pa Ti,” and “Toussaint L’Overture.”
The band’s spiritual “Jazz Rock” side is showcased along with “Latin Rock” favorites such as “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va,” and the sound quality is immaculate (just as we would expect from Japanese recordings). This album’s high points are truly orgasmic, and the way the band merges together their two separate periods is impressive (tracks 7 through 12 on Side One sounds like a singularly, seamless suite).
The LP does have its flaws. For one, the omission of “Soul Sacrifice” is glaring. It would have been interesting to hear how the new band would have put their twist on it. Second, the inclusion of an extended drum solo on “Kyoto,” is a waste of vinyl space and totally unnecessary and is hardly Shrieve’s finest hour (but, hey, it was the 70’s and drum solos were mandatory). Lastly, DO NOT try to listen to this 3 record set in one sitting. Although, compelling and intriguing, Santana extended experimental workouts can wear thin in a single listen. “Lotus” is best savored in sips, like a fine cognac.
Anyone who has ever questioned Carlos’ “Guitar Deity” standing should be suitably impressed by his dazzling playing, while the other members’ considerable contributions demonstrate why Santana, at their best, were always more than just Carlos. Seen by many a Santana fan as an essential item in the Santana canon, especially since several new songs appear here for the first and only time, “Lotus” is a testament to Santana’s longevity and inventiveness. This is the only live Santana you will every need. —Eduard

LABELS Are in excellent + Near Pristine condition with no marks or stains seen.
COVER Is in very good + clean condition. It does have very light edge wear. There is an opening edge which has a 1" split. The large spine has some light wear seen. ( Triple foldover cover )
INSERTS Contains its original inserts, they include :
1. Four individual colour two sided posters of band members. 2. Two x four part double sided foldover colour posters. 3. A two part Quadrophonic CBS / Sony advertising insert. All of the inserts are in excellent condition
INNERS They come in their original Santana / Lotus Die cut paper inners.
