Description

Vinyl NM.  Jacket EX w/ very minor shelf wear on edges.  NM original white sleeve.  Gatefold includes lyrics and liner notes.  Jazzletter JLR-1. 
THE PLANET IS ALIVE...LET IT LIVE!:  SARAH VAUGHAN SINGS POPE JOHN PAUL II documents a June 30, 1984 performance in Dusseldorf, West Germany by Sarah Vaughan, who sings English translations of poetry by Pope John Paul II backed by a 70-piece jazz orchestra and chorus that included Art Farmer, Benny Bailey, Sahib Shahib, Rolf Ericson and Edmund Thigpen.  Music to accompany the former Karol Wojtyla's words was composed by Tito Fontana and Sante Palumbo.  One new song was composed by arranger Francy Boland with lyrics by translator Gene Lees, and another by Lees and "Mission Impossible" composer Lalo Schifrin.  The concert, conceptualized as a plea for world peace, was taped for broadcast on European TV.  But despite the status of the musicians involved and the celebrity of the chief lyricist, no major record label expressed interest in its distribution.  Consequently Lees released it as a privately funded pressing on his own label Jazzletter, which makes this item a limited edition rarity.
