SAVOY BROWN BLUES BAND – Shake Down ORIG Decca LP / SKL 4883 (UK, Stereo, 1967)

Here’s a super copy of Savoy Brown’s accomplished debut LP on original unboxed Decca. All shades of the blues here from all out stompers to soulful grooves. Some great leads as well from Kim Simmonds and Mighty Baby’s Martin Stone with the original vocalist Brice Portius.
The single format, front-laminated sleeve has survived really well, surely better than 90% of remaining copies still out there. Apart from some tiny edge creases the front laminate is completely WITHOUT CREASES! Spine is absolutely superb – not compressed and with all text sitting proud and legible. Top and bottom edges again excellent, no splits, tears or rubbing. Only (minor) gripes are light ring impression to the front and the same (slightly more defined) to the rear. Slight corner bump to the bottom right. A little evidence of rubbing and handling to the rear panel and one fine, inconspicuous pen line to the rear right. Overall, well above average and deserving of a strong EX- (Excellent Minus) grade.
The original wide-band, unboxed blue Decca labels are superb with no writing, soiling or tears. Spindle evidence is extremely minimal. Beautiful pair of these 1967 labels!
The medium weight vinyl bears the following matrices in the run-offs:
Side 1 – ZAL 7887-1W
Side 2 – ZAL 7888-1W
It’s a lovely copy, virtually unblemished! Super shine, no scratches or hairlines at all. Possibly a small patch of faint scuffing and some virtually invisible sleeve traces if you look ultra closely. By all evidence it appears very seldom played and for good looks must grade a lovely EX+ (Excellent Plus). IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and is a superb play. All I picked up was a single click to the end of track 4 on side 2 and the occasional, near inaudible soft tick. So that means NO snap, crackle or pops, NO repeated clicks, NO hiss, distortion or loss of clarity/lack of definition. Comes out of the speakers full steam ahead with an incredible warmth 45 years after being pressed. Play grade matches the visual one and will surely please.
Summary: a near perfect disc housed in a fresh, looked after sleeve with no (major) creases. A proper keeper in my book!

I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades. After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN? What is NM+? Or EX---? These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay. I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade. Excellent, by dictionary definition means‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
