SAVOY BROWNLooking In
ORIGINAL UK DECCA (SKL 5066) FIRST PRESSING (November 1970) OF SAVOY BROWN'S SUPERB "Looking In" LP - IN MY OPINION, THEIR FINEST PIECE OF WORK AND THIS COPY IS IN BEAUTIFUL, BARELY PLAYED CONDITION DELIVERING PRETTY MUCH FLAWLESS SOUND THROUGHOUT - DEEP, RICH AND WARM - AND IT'S HOUSED IN THE INCREDIBLY RARE OUTER LAMINATED GATEFOLD SLEEVE - A SUPERB COPY OF THIS WONDERFUL LP
PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL WITH THE FIRST ISSUE (SMALL) BLUE DECCA ffss LABELS
FIRST ISSUE MATRIX: XZAL - 10072.P - 1W / XZAL - 10073.P - 1W
THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL OUTER LAMINATED GATEFOLD “Sleeve printed in England by Moore & Matthes Ltd."
COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL BLUE STEREO DECCA COMPANY INNER SLEEVE - OF THE VERY EARLY, NON DIE-CUT DESIGN
Savoy Brown's blues-rock sound takes on a much more defined feel on 1970's Looking In and is one of this band's best efforts.
Kim Simmonds is utterly bewildering on guitar, while Lonesome Dave Peverett does a fine job taking over lead singing duties from Chris Youlden who left halfway through the year.
But it's the captivating arrangements and alluring ease of the music that makes this a superb listen.
The pleading strain transformed through Simmonds' guitar on "Money Can't Save Your Soul" is mud-thick with raw blues, and the comfort of "Sunday Night" is extremely smooth and laid back.
"Take It Easy" sounds like it could have been a B.B. King tune as it's doused with relaxed guitar fingering.
The entire album is saturated with a simple, British blues sound but the pace and the marbled strands of bubbly instrumental perkiness fill it with life.
Even the Yardbirds-flavoured "Leaving Again" is appealing with its naïve hooks, capped off with a heart-stopping guitar solo.
Track Listing:
Side 1: Gypsy / Poor Girl / Money Can't Save Your Soul / Sunday Night / Looking In)
Side 2: Take It Easy / Sitting An' Thinking / Leavin' Again / Romanoff
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright, unmarked with a few light spindle traces - this copy has seen very, very little play - NEAR MINT
VINYL Visual: Both vinyl surfaces retain their original deep glossy sheen and are practically unmarked - some light hairlines only - NEAR MINT
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio quality on this pressing - deep, rich and warm - beautifully recorded and engineered by Decca (who produced the finest sounding records of the period) and on playback at a loud volume there are no major audio issues of note - this press is beautifully clean and I have no hesitation critically grading the playback as NEAR MINT - a really beautiful copy
SLEEVE: The rare outer laminated sleeve is in lovely condition. The laminated surfaces have a beautiful deep glossy sheen with just some light record impression on the back. The inner unlaminated surfaces are clean, fresh and unmarked. The edges and spine show practically no wear and the spine is straight and true with all text clear and bold - EXCELLENT+++
