SAX 2298/9 Blue/Silver – L’ELISIR D’AMORE – SERAFIN / TEATRO LA SCALA MILAN
1959 Columbia stereo recordings in 2 individually packaged sleeves catalogue numbers SAX 2298/9 with blue/silver labels. Gaetano Donizetti’s opera L’Elisir D’Amore with Tulio Serafin conducting the Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala, Milan. Cast: Rosanna Carteri, Luigi Alva, Rolando Panerai, Guiseppe Taddei, Angela Vercelli.
This is such a beautiful recording that it is sad that this copy is not in better condition. We have tried to detail all the shortcomings as accurately as possible. All 4 sides have visible marks. Side 1 has about 15 noticeable ticks about half-way through plus 7 very light random ticks. Side 2: 3 very light ticks and 5 noticeable ones. Side 3: light crackle at start and 5 light random ticks. Side 4: 80/90 ticks (these are mostly very light but are noticeable) plus brief crackle at end of track 1. The 2 sleeves are scruffy with edge/corner damage, sticky tape and faded edges. The 32-page illustrated libretto is excellent.
This is definitely not worth a top-end price but it’s a lovely recording and the defects don’t detract from the pleasure as much as might be expected.
