The late great David Oistrakh's unerring taste and classical instincts, impeccable musicianship and unfailing elogance of phrasing are so self-effacing that one can fail to notice initially, and if one doesn't listen attentively, his genius. If any work requires this level of artistry it is the Beethoven concerto and in this recording his performance and interpretation virtually eclipses all others. He plays the music absolutely straight and wins the listener over with subtlety and humanity, although his virtuosity is second to none. No wonder the late Mstislav Rostropovitch idealised him as an interpreter. Listen to the cadenza in the last movement if you need convincing. Andre Cluytens accompanies with exemplary taste, restraint and skill and this is one of the very finest of the records in the wonderful Columbia Stereo Catalogue from the late 50's and early 6o's. An absolute must for the discerning classical collector.
