The Saxons: Draggin' Around EP (Rondo SAX 1, UK 1964)
Here's one that you probably don't have yet, even if you collect private press British Beat and Freakbeat records from the UK. The Saxons were based in Exeter in southwestern England, and they were not the group of the same name who were produced by Joe Meek for Decca. This EP was recorded on 12 March 1964, according to the sleeve notes – but it sounds at least a year later! The band has a desolate, punky sound that is really original and totally stunning. Proof that distorted guitars did not come to England with "You Really Got Me"!
"Right Throughly" surfaced briefly on Revenge Of The Amphetamine Generation, and "Draggin' Around" was on the wacky comp Wavy Gravy: For Adult Enthusiasts. The instrumental "Cagewalk" and the Buddy Holly-sounding beat tune "Looking Everywhere" are still uncomped. You can hear "Draggin' Around" on YouTube.
Condition: The record has a few hairlines, but no scuffs or deep scratches. Both sides play with a very small amount of noise. The flipback picture sleeve has some slight creasing, a very small split in the middle of the spine, and a coffee stain near the opening (see scans). Otherwise the sleeve too is in nice condition.
Payment methods: PayPal only!
Postage costs: US$7 worldwide, first class (air mail). Not US$4 to the United States, as eBay requires me to state! Carefully packed in new bubble bag with cardboard stiffeners inside. If you win more than one of the singles and EPs in my auctions, I will combine the postage - it's the same, $7, no matter how many records are sent to the same address.
