Description
THE SIX BROWN BROTHERS were a saxophone sextet in the days when people hardly knew what a saxophone WAS or what one could do with it. The instrument had languished in obscurity since being invented in the 1840s by Adolph Sax. Despite occasional fitful attempts to 'legitimize' it, the situation had not changed much until 1916, when THESE bad boys came on the scene.
The Brown Brothers were a polished act, headliners in Vaudeville, and tremendous on their instruments. Using the whole saxophone family (sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass) they formed a neat little orchestra, choreographed and costumed, and FINALLY made America "Saxophone Conscious"! They directly paved the way for Rudy Wiedoeft, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.
Here, they play two jaunty pieces, "SAXOPHONE SOBS" and "WALKIN' THE DOG." "Sobs" is a bit of novelty ragtime; "Dog" is a proto-jazz piece by Shelton Brooks, made truly hot years later by Hoagy Carmichael's Collegians.
This original 1916 "Bat Wing" Victor 18140 is in lovely E condition. The record has a long internal fracture, which is inaudible on "Sobs," makes some noise on "Walkin'." It will be packed with great care.

I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!
