SCARCE 78rpm BLACK SNAKE BLUES RECORD - MARTHA COPELAND

1920s COLUMBIA RACE Record
by MARTHA COPELAND

-14161-D (142608) Black Snake Blues
-14161-D (142609) Papa If You Can't Do Better

DESCRIPTION:

Martha Copeland (c1891,?) "was an American classic female blues singer. She recorded 34 songs between 1923 and 1928 . . . Apart from her recording career, little is known of her life."

OVERALL CONDITION:

There are no chips but there are several STRESS FRACTURES along the wide edge of the record. However they don't run into the grooves, and these fractures have not yet weakened the record further. The record shows a little GREYING in the grooves and has numerous SCRATCHES & MARKS (see scan below).

The COLUMBIA label has some scratches and the letters are somewhat faded on one side. (see scan below).

PLAYING ON MY PLAYER:

Both sides have the usual snaps, crackles & pops. Black Snake Blues song has about medium background noise. The noise never really overpowers the words and music which still come through quite well. The other side of the record has only minor background noise. Both sides have a few scratched areas where the needle "clicks" a bit but doesn't skip or get stuck.

This is a scarce Classic Blues record on the COLUMBIA label.

The following scan shows front and reverse of this old record and both sides of its COLUMBIA label:
