Description
SCARCE OKEH 78 rpm SUGAR BLUES RECORD by SARA MARTIN
1920s RACE record by SARA MARTIN:
-8041-A Sugar Blues (Clarence Williams)
-8041-B Achin' Hearted Blues
DISCRIPTION:
Sara Martin (1884 – 1955) "was an American blues singer, in her time one of the most popular of the classic blues singers. She was billed as "The Famous Moanin' Mama" . . . She made many recordings, including a few under the names Margaret Johnson and Sally Roberts."
OVERALL CONDITION:
There are two smalll edge-chips on the B-side and the beginning of a STRESS-CRACK starting from one of them. The crack has not materially weakened the record yet however. The record is quite "WORN" with GREYING in the grooves and numerous SCRATCHES & MARKS (see scan below).
The OKEH label has some scratches and scrapes especially in the worn area around the center hole (see scan below).
PLAYING ON MY PLAYER:
Both sides have the usual snaps, crackles & pops. There is about MEDIUM BACKGROUND NOISE (mostly through the first half of the songs). The background noise at its worse is about equally as loud as the music. The second half of the songs have much less background noise. The words & music come through quite well. There are a few scratched areas where the needle "clicks" a bit but doesn't skip or get stuck.
This is a scarce Classic Blues record on the OKEH label & still in quite "playable" condition.
The following scan shows front and reverse of this old record and both sides of its OKEH label:
