We grade optically under halogen light.
S : Sealed at factory and never opened. Record is assumed to be undamaged and mint, but this cannot be proven until the album is actually opened and the disc examined.
M : The record is in brand new condition, absolutely perfect.
NM : This grade is used for records that appear virtually flawless but not perfect. Few minor scuffs can appear on the record.
EX : The record shows some signs of having been played, may have few minor scuffs and scratches but nothing that is obvious. None or very little lessening in sound quality.
VG+ : Some visible surface wear, scratches and scuffs, some lessening in sound quality.
VG : Record will have noticeable scratches, scuffs and lessening in sound quality (pops and crackles).
When you buy a used (30-60 years old ) vinyl, it might come with some dust, maybe not. If there is some dust, just make sure clean it before you play.
