Scott Finch & Gypsy follow up the album "Haze Of Mother Nature" with their latest release "The Velvet Groove." I didn't think there was any way possible to top the last album, but they have. Finch's playing is becoming more authoritative and focused as time goes on. With a nod to James Marshall Hendrix on the inner sleeve of this LP as their spiritual guide, its not hard to figure out what influence is predominant in this music.
Finch's vocals are also very mature and steady, adding to his already impressive arsenal of musical weapons. His six-string prowess is the dominant factor and focal point throughout all four sides of music. The other two members of the group, Joe Steil (bass, vocals), and Gregg Slavik (drums, vocals), help Finch to emulate the Hendrix power trio style to make it all complete.
The two Hendrix songs that the group covers, "3rd Stone From The Sun" and "Red House", must have Jimi smiling in heaven right now. "Mass Hate" and "Oh Cleopatra" are awesome mind bending original rockers that only a guitarman like Finch could play. His playing is so clean and sharp; it cuts like a shimmering blade through the air that you breathe and wisps you away to another land.
While making fantastic music consistently is not a common thing these days, it sure takes a very special group of artists to make great music every time out, which this trio does. This album is sweet music to my rock and roll ears. I highly recommend purchasing the vinyl and the CD… one to play in the car cranked all they way up, and one for home to shake the roof off. In addition to the great music the packaging on this attractive 180 gram two LP set is very unique. The album jacket (gatefold LP) is real red velvet with high quality photos and top-notch liner notes.
There was Hendrix, the blues, and rock and roll, and then came Scott Finch & Gypsy. They are one of the last saviors of rock and roll. Pay your respects and get this music.
