Scott Walker's success as a teen idol singer of Spectorish ballads with the Walker Brothers in no way prepared listeners for the mordant, despairing lyrics of his solo debut. To compound the surprise, he does his best to imitate the vocal girth of Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra on this mix of original tunes and covers, which also features sweeping, bloated orchestral arrangements. It was hardly rock, and pop of a most oddball sort, but it found a surprisingly large audience -- in Britain, anyway, where it reached the Top Three in 1967. Poke behind the velvet curtain of the languid MOR arrangements, and one finds a surprisingly literate existentialist at the helm of these proceedings. His lyrical nuances were probably lost on his audience of predominately teenage girls, though they've earned him a small cult audience that endures to this day. Besides presenting three of his own compositions, Walker covers tunes by Weill/Mann, Tim Hardin, and Andre & Dory Previn on this album, as well as three songs by his favorite writer, Jacques Brel. Highlights include his exquisitely anguished rendition of Brel's classic "Amsterdam" and his dramatic cover of the early-'60s Toni Fisher pop ballad "The Big Hurt."

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY RICHIE UNTERBERGER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

About ten seconds into this album, all of a sudden you realize you are not in Kansas anymore. Colors disappear and everything goes black-and-white. The European existentialism starts swirling around you, the twister of doom and gloom and pain of futility of human existence engulfs everything…the classic neogothic victoriana swallows everything, Dodo included. This is the ultimate thinking-man's album: all those slow, mournful , dirge-like songs, delivered in an impossibly mellifluous, deep and resonant baritone of Scott Walker reminiscent to that of Fred Neil or Tim Buckley and almost as resonant as a big cosmic AUMMM. Many of the critics of the 1960's and 1970's considered Scott Walker only a third-rate impersonator of Jacques Brell, but the passing of time has been remarkably kind to him, his music and his songs have aged astonishingly well, and he has acquired a huge cult followership over the years. This, his first album from the 1960's (on the original "Philips" label - AND, YES, YOU GET THE VERY RARE MONO COPY HERE!!!), is probably his best: the songs range from playful to very dark and most profoundly pessimistic and brooding. An intense listening, not for the faint of heart. Track listing: Mathilde - Montague Terrace - Angelica - The Lady came from Baltimore - When Joanna loved me - My Death - The Big Hurt - Such a small love - You're gonna hear from me - Through a long and sleepless night - Always coming back to you - Amsterdam. The album includes a whole slew of Jacques Brell covers, and a great cover of Tim Hardin's "Lady came from Baltimore". The album also includes Brell's "My Death", which Scott Walker made his signature tune

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is STILL in its original 'Made in England' poly-lined stock inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams

-        Cover has visible "wrinkles"(creases)  in two (2) of its corners.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No ring wear

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.
