'AT HOME WITH SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS'. USA (EPIC). LN 3448. (1958).
First pressing on original Epic labels. Great condition!
This incredible record has Mickey Baker on guitar and several other key USA musicians of the time performing on it. Includes 'I Put A Spell On You', 'Orange Coloured Sky' and many other classic tracks. This LP influenced so many 1960's/1970's artists such as Screaming Lord Sutch, Arthur Brown and Alice Cooper.
Screamin' (Jalacy) Hawkins though was a 'true original' and this 1958 LP proves it! Fantastic stuff.
Book price in Mint condition is $1200.
The cover is very clean and has not lost any of it's vibrant orange/red colour. Some copies have faded but this one is very impactful. The front has a barely noticeable tidemark caused by a small spillage at some point in its history, but this in no way affects the beauty of this cover. Behind a plastic sleeve you wouldn't know it was there at all. You really have to look for it. Fortunately this looks like it was just a splash of water and nothing so bad as a cup of coffee! Were it not for this minor thing I would grade the sleeve as EX+, but for the purposes of this auction I will grade the cover as EXCELLENT. There are very slight signs of inevitable ring wear, but compared to the few I've seen for sale this rates among the better ones. There is a 2 cm seam split on the top right of the cover. The spine is intact, and the majority of the text and catalog number is visible. Nice deep bold pressed matrix codes stamped into the run off grooves. (Codes below).
The record is in beautiful shape for its age. I grade this a full EXCELLENT visually, and EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT PLUS aurally.
Playback is superb with only a bit of extremely light crackle between tracks.
This record has a very full MONO mix, and the saxophones come alive through the speakers (as of course, do SJH's vocals).
