Screamin' Jay Hawkins was a legend. He was a completely insane bluesman / rock 'n' roller who was known mostly for his Vincent Price-like antics and amazing stage show. The music on this rare original UK lp is kinda like rock 'n' roll, kinda blues, kinda R&B, and at times it is like the Misfits. Screamin Jay isn't one of those musicians who had his fluffy one-hit on the charts type. His music is really weird, the lyrics could only have been created by a man whose mind was burnt from too much sun. Each song creates a fantastic atmosphere, some are funny, and that's what makes this really rock 'n' roll. It is music that seeks to stir the imagination. The whole album makes you feel as if you are hanging out with some demented group of out-cast, voodoo worshipping, nutcases. Of course the vocals of Screamin' Jay dominate the scene, he blasts away like a man possessed at the air as if trying to knock down some unseen demon with his words. Back in the day, Screamin' Jay Hawkins put the show in show business. His voodoo-inspired stage act included fireworks, flash powder, snakes, shrunken heads, and his faithful companion, a skull named Henry. To start his concerts, he was carried on in a coffin, from which he leaped, as if risen from the dead, often sending a good portion of his audience scampering for the exits. All of that sounds quaint by current standards, but at the time it was as controversial--perhaps more so--than Marilyn Manson is today. So was Screamin' Jay's music, which was marked with wild, wordless exhortations and orgasmic screams. This album contains Hawkins's best tracks, including the essential "I Put a Spell on You" plus "Little Demon," "Frenzy," "Alligator Wine," and "Person to Person," among others. In the grand scheme of things, Hawkins's schtick made him a legend, but in the short run, he was limited by what some saw as a mere novelty act. Still, he recorded some fine, honking R&B and proto-rock & roll that still sounds great (and completely out of control). I recomend this for fans of old time rock, the bizzare, the strange, or those who like to keep items in their collection that defy the norm. Screamin' Jay influenced so much more music that most one-hit wonders do. If it weren't for him, The Cramps, Alice Cooper, and Marilyn Manson wouldn't exist. Psychobilly, proto-punk, shock rock, etc.. - it all starts here. Screamin' Jay Hawkins was a one-of-a-kind, don't miss out!
