The album reached #1 on the Billboard chart in 1971 and served as a launching pad for numerous stage productions on Broadway and in the West End. This original 1970 2-record set is packaged in a thick textured (leather like) brown gatefold cover which contains the 2 vinyl records & a 28-page libretto.

Performing in "SUPERSTAR" are members (past and present) of DEEP PURPLE, JOE COCKER'S GREASE BAND, LORD SUTCH, AYNSLEY DUNBAR RETALIATION, THE BIG THREE, JUICY LUCY, QUATERMASS, MERSEYBEATS, GRACIOUS, PLASTIC PENNY, SPOOKY TOOTH, MANFRED MANN and NUCLEUS.
Conceived by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice while the British duo were still in their early 20s, the rock opera JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR was released in 1970 as a studio album before its many subsequent stage productions. Featuring Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan (in his screaming prime) as Jesus and Murray Head as Judas, this recording presents the initial versions of these well-known \tunes, including the hardrocking, frenetic "What's the Buzz?/Strange Thing Mystifying" and "The Temple," a hauntingly chaotic number. Although other productions of the musical are highly regarded, this original version is arguably the best.
CONDITION: STILL SEALED...gold record award sticker on outside cellophane wrapper ... a perfect sharp corners copy with no delete marks, it's prefect. Never opened.
