"Desertshore" is not that different from Nico's previous album, "The Marble Index", but at the same time, it is. It's not as unexplainably apocalyptical as its predecessor, but it also shows a large variety of emotions and sounds.
Its opener, "Janitor of Lunacy", is a classic, and her voice is amazing and hypnotizing, and its melody is beautifully intense. Similar moments of intensity are "Abschied" and "Mutterlein", both sung in German, which for a non-speaker, sounds amazing.
We also have moments of vulerability and emotional frailty we didn't her on "The Marble Index", like "Afraid", "My Only Child" and the second half of "The Falconer". The kind-of-an-interlude "Le petit chevalier" is also cute (a word you don't usually use for Nico), with Nico's son, Ari, doing its vocals.
"Desertshore" also has its fair share of, well, lunacy, on pretty much all tracks, but specially the last track, "All That Is My Own", with obscure lyrics and very unusual sound effects. The album might not be as classical as "Chelsea Girl" or as ancient as "The Marble Index", but it's as good as both and as unique as both.
