PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Original 1969 first pressing in thick gatefold cover --Colosseum was one of the pivotal progressive bands that emerged in the second part of the Sixties. Unfortunalety the progressive world was more impressed by Genesis and King Crimson, so COLOSSEUM was a bit understimated in the progressive rock circles...
Colosseum's first, was and still is an ear-opener, showing what excellent musicians playing excellent music, can do. Hiseman had played jazz and blues (check out his collaboration on Jack Bruce's first solo "Things We Like"). Dick Heckstall Smith (who could do a Roland Kirk and play several wind instruments simultaneously), had long paid his dues with Graham Bond and John Mayall and had become one the better known UK reeds swingers. While the then relative new names of James Litherland (guitar and vocals), Dave Greenslade (keys) and Tony Reeves (bass and producer), contributed in their equal ways, to produce an album that remains a classic almost 41 years later.
The album kicks off with the best version of Graham Bond's great R'n'B tune "Walking In The Park". The following tunes cover a lot of musical space, as one might expect from the types of musician involved. Straight blues to complex, and with Dave Greenslade's presence, there is a smattering of serious progressive rock. The whole drives along, and because of the mix of musical styles and influences should hold your interest throughout - whether with a slow burning blues or a more complex based solos.
The album coming right at the change of decades, promised the 70's would take rock music to new highs. Alas the hope for better things was short lived. James Litherland left too soon to be replaced by the "veteran" Chris Farrow on vocals. Farrow gave Colosseum a rougher, and somewhat rawer sound. Indeed, the high point of this special album is the discovery of Litherland's voice. His vocals may be ranked with the very best coming out of Britain's blue-eyed blues period; others included Jack Bruce, Rod Stewart, Chris Youlden, Paul Rodgers and the long forgotten Spit James (of the Keef Hartley Band).
Overall, this album is a stunning debut, definitely groundbreaking....
