This album hails from a time before the artist's true reckoning, but reflects his true talent. While "Space Oddity" and "Cygnet Committee" are the only two songs that foreshadow the odysseys to come on such albums as The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, and "Unwashed..." is the only slightly rock'n'roll tune to precede things like Hunky Dory, this selection isn't without its niche in the catalog.
The slammed acoustic guitar is a mainstay throughout the tracklist, depicting an honest, intimate look into Bowie's mind. Overall, it has a very folky sound with vivid phantasmagoric lyrical imageries, from the vocal melodies to the accompaniments, and also the fact that about half of the songs include percussion as anything more than distant, padded thumps. But as always, Bowie's lyrics are a paradox of opaqueness and vividness, even with his simple songs about losing relationships like "Letter to Hermione."
A favorite track remains "Memory of a Free Festival," which is also one of the most unusual tunes. Parts of it reminisce with the Beatles, part of it with Dylan, and part of it with something that's hard to place. It ends with a beautiful, mysterious lyric, The sun machine is coming down, and we're gonna have a party. That, pertaining to a music festival, should drive the mind wild.
It's a kinked chapter in the Bowie timeline, and one that is a highlight of his long career.
