LARRY MURRAY, Sweet Country Suite
There’s truck drivin’ music - typified by the Dave Dudley honky-Tonka classics “Six Days on the Road” and “Rolaids, Doan’s Pills, and Preparation H” - and then there’s pickup truck drivin’ music, which is more about the feel of things than logbooks or Freightliners. And the best parts of Sweet Country Suite, Larry Murray’s 1970 solo record after leaving his psychedelic country band Hearts and Flowers, are perfect for pickup truck drivin’. “Country Comfort”’s aching electric guitar leads and buoyant, gospel-tinged gang vocal on the chorus nod to Gram Parsons. But with a line like “Country comforts and a road that’s going home,” it’s also a prime candidate for cruising in a rickety old F series on a pretty summer day. As for pretty, the gently acoustic ballad “When I see Jamie (Jaynie)” is right up there, too, while its subtle but crafty arrangement highlights why the gems on this record - “Jamie,” “Comfort,” “All I Need is a Friend,” and the introspective, heavily folk-tinged opener “Headed for the Country” - elevate Sweet Country Suite above typical country-rock of the era, and let it become the sort of thing you can imagine you just discovered on a foggy AM station in that rattling old Ford. It’s actually on your iPod; you’re not fooling anyone. But that’s okay, because it’s common knowledge that terrestrial radio will never play stuff this great again.
