NOTE FROM SELLER:
This is the U.S. reissue of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, issued by Capitol Records in June 1967, just days after the U.K. debut. Produced by George Martin, it is widely regarded as one of the most influential and groundbreaking albums in music history.
Key Features of the U.S. First Pressing:
-
Label: Capitol black label with rainbow color band around the rim, catalog number SMAS-2653 (stereo).
-
Cover: sleeve with the famous Peter Blake and Jann Haworth collage artwork. Lyrics printed on the back cover.
-
Inserts: Includes the original color cardboard cut-out sheet (with mustache, badges, sergeant stripes, and bandstand) and a custom psychedelic-designed inner sleeve.
-
Pressing Plants: Early copies were pressed at Capitol’s Los Angeles, Scranton, and Jacksonville facilities, with distinctive plant codes in the runouts (e.g., IAM triangle for Scranton).
-
Audio: Unlike the U.K. pressing, the U.S. edition does not include the high-pitched tone and “inner groove gibberish” at the end of A Day in the Life. The album ends on the final chord fade-out.
How to Identify the First U.S. Issue (vs. later reissues):
-
Must have the Capitol rainbow label. Later 1970s reissues came on the Apple label or Capitol’s orange/purple labels.
-
No barcode on the sleeve (barcodes appeared on 1980s issues).
-
Original 1967 cut-outs and psychedelic inner sleeve present. Later reissues often omitted or replaced these.
-
Early runouts typically end with matrix numbers -1/-1; subsequent pressings may show -2 or higher.
This pressing captures the historical significance of the Beatles’ psychedelic masterpiece as it was first experienced in the United States. Essential for collectors of original Capitol Beatles releases.
