CANNONBALL ADDERLY & BOSSA RIO SEXTET w/SERGIO MENDEZ
This is Cannonball Adderley's contribution to the BOSSA NOVA craze which was all the rage in 1962. Recorded with Brazilian musicians, including Sergio Mendez on piano and future Weather Report percussionist Dom Um Romao. Original LP with bonus track. From the first notes, I was entranced. This is a magnificently subtle, understated blend of the two Americas. Cannonball's sax is the lead player, but never overblown. Floating, winding, ebbing & flowing, passionately controlled, he dances with the Bossa Rio Sextet in the sunshine of their sublime, joyfully disciplined rhythms. This is an unselfconscious love affair. Buy yourself a deckchair, allow these craftsmen to play and you allow yourself to relax - everything, but everything is taken care of for you here. Cannonball seems to be one of those musicans who can turn his hand to most styles. If you like JAZZ you will love this, and if you don’t like jazz, you will probably love it anyway. Songs like sambop and o amor em pas showcase the impressively fluid style of Cannonball.
