Sepultura & Morbid Visions Overview Sepultura emerged from the industrial city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in the mid-1980s, a time when the global metal scene was largely dominated by North American and European bands. As teenagers isolated from the international circuit, they forged their sound through a shared obsession with Venom, Motörhead, Slayer, and Hellhammer. Their early work is a testament to raw ambition and primal energy, characterized by a ferocious, lo-fi production that mirrored the chaos and intensity of their influences. The band's initial lineup, featuring the Cavalera brothers—Max on vocals and guitar and Igor on drums—alongside guitarist Jairo Guedz and bassist Paulo Jr., created a violent, unpolished sound that would become a foundational pillar of both death and black metal. They were not just imitators; they were a raw, volcanic force from an unexpected part of the world, channeling their youthful aggression into something dark and new.
Released in 1986, Morbid Visions is the band's full-length debut and a landmark of primitive extreme metal. The album is a brutal, chaotic onslaught that captures the sound of a young band discovering its power.
