If there's one way to immediately improve the 1978 RSO disaster-of-a-film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, it's to take half the soundtrack and toss it in the bin. That's exactly what happened before this pared-down version of the soundtrack was sent out to radio.
This single album distillation of the better tracks from the film makes it a whole lot more listenable, and was sent to radio stations with high hopes of a hit. Unfortunately, it didn't work.
Even though there was a lot of fanfare when the album shipped Platinum, it had so many returns that it was joked that it was the first album to be returned 'gold.'
This advance promo 45 was an attempt to stir up some airplay with the title track. It’s got the title song on both sides and was only available as this promo 45. Nice insert with the sleeve too, right?
