Description
I had no idea I'd been sitting on Shakin' Stevens' first, and most valuable single, 1970's 'Spirit of Woodstock' (Parlophone R 5680) for some 47 years until I started to catalogue my singles and check values with RRPG which confirmed that, indeed, no other of his 45s is rated higher. Then I checked Discogs - where they have NO copy of it for sale; and consulted Popsike where they list three sold for THREE FIGURE sums this year alone; while ebay is listing no other copy than this one as far as I can see. I figure that makes this quite a sought after item, given that I have no recollection of ever playing it, despite the fact that it would have been sent to me as a review copy back when I was a record reviewer.
But Shaky and the Sunsets almost certainly would have struggled to warrant even a spin back then, so I'm pretty certain it has only ever been played once - as I decided I should give it a spin just to confirm that it plays perfectly - which it did on the trial occasion.It is without spindle marks or any significant mark on either side of the record. The original cover is in very good nick, too, considering how long it has been stored. The B side is 'Down On The Farm' which was produced by Dave Edmunds and lists an 'Edmunds' as co-writer with Downing - so, an Edmunds' rarity, too. There is a small EMI 'Factory Sample' sticker on this side which was standard on their review copies. Very unusually, the A side lists no composer credits but it, too, was produced by Dave Edmunds. What else can I tell you? Shaky didn't hit the singles' charts until 1980, so when this came out he was starting a lengthy road to success. This is a real Shaky or Dave Edmunds' holy grail-style essential.
