Review: "Absolutely the best sounding rock record ever made." ~ Harry Pearson, Absolute Sound (TAS)
From The Album Jacket: The Sheffield Track Record" is designed as a test record to present the absolute maximum amount of signal to a high fidelity system to demonstrate the merits of different components. This is the 22nd album we have recorded directly to the master disc without the use of any tape recorder. Only by recording direct to disc can the full storage capability of the pure disc medium be realized and the true impact of rock instruments be captured. To achieve this level of impact, the lathe operator was required to allow maximum groove spacing so that the full energy of the low frequencies and bass transients were recorded without compression. For this reason the total playing time of this record is somewhat shorter than usual (about 16 minutes). To have done anything else would have violated the purpose of making this record."
"Producer/engineer Bill Schnee specifically sought to capture the instruments that are the heart of rock music---the drum set and the electric bass. The rhythm, sound, and mixing of the drums and electric bass are the fundamental core of rock music and represent the basic underpinning of 60% of all records sold. This direct disc contains more peak transient energy, higher resolution, and more dynamic range than can be recorded with any other method, be it digital or analog. Therefore, a high fidelity system capable of reproducing the impact, low end transients, and dynamic range of "The Sheffield Track Record" is a system that is definitely capable of handling the demands of popular commercial recordings. The drums and bass on this album were recorded to have a tight, satisfying sound, with well-controlled punch. When comparing any two components by playing this record, whichever component delivers greater clarity and tautness of bass is more accurately reproducing what was created in the studio."
"We wanted this album to be composed of four basic instrumental tracks. Basic instrumental tracks represent the true backbone of any commercial recording and studio musicians all know that for sheer impact and exhilarating energy, these basic accompaniment tracks considerably surpass the "final" record after many hours of overdubbing, mixdown, and editing are performed. Bill Schnee assembled a group of the hottest and most in demand young rock musicians in the industry---exactly the type of players who could give basic tracks the hottest possible treatment. It was immediately evident when our sessions began that these musicians had tremendous feel for these rock tunes and that this album would be much more than a "rattle and boom" test record. In fact, the two keyboard artists, Robbie Buchanan and James Newton Howard, each brought in a song of his own which had such naturally appealing melodies that we elected to include these songs ("Amuseum" and "Le Ballade") as more complete arrangements. Hence, we have two songs that are truly "basic tracks," and two that are not quite so basic."
"We feel that this record can not only serve as a useful evaluation tool for the dynamic efficiency and musical responsiveness of a high fidelity system, but also will be regarded as an album with rock music that has great natural appeal and flair."
