Shirley Elizabeth Collins is a British folksinger who was a significant contributor to the English Folk Revival of the 1960s and 1970s. She often performed and recorded with her sister Dolly, whose accompaniment on piano and portative organ created unique settings for her sister's plain, austere singing style.

No Roses is an album by Shirley and the Albion Country Band. It was recorded in London, in the summer of 1971. Produced by Sandy Robertson and Ashley Hutchings (Shirley Collins' husband at the time). It was released in October 1971 on the Obscure Pegasus label. It is very unusual to have 27 musicians and singers on an album of traditional folk songs the people simply dropped in during recording sessions and were asked to join in. "The Murder of Maria Marten", a lengthy song about the Red Barn Murder, is broken into segments, with parts of British folk rock alternating with more traditional parts featuring Shirley Collins' voice and a hurdy-gurdy drone. Some songs, for instance Poor Murdered Woman and Murder of the Maria Marten, feature big parts of the Fairport Convention line-up of late 1969 (Liege and Lief). In fact, Fairport Convention member Ashley Hutchings appears on all, Simon Nicol on eight and Richard Thompson on seven of the nine songs on this album. Both drummer Roger Powell and pianist Ian Whiteman previously played together in the band Mighty Baby. BBC radio had listed `No Roses` amongst the top 10 Folk music albums of all time.

Sleeve: (Mint-) Lovely `Textured` `E.J.Day Group, London` Thick Card Gatefold sleeve, perfect Spine, No edgewear or Ringwear looks `shop release` condition, with just 1 or 2 ageing spots - superb condition (see photos)

Trivia: The Red Barn Murder was a notorious murder committed in Polstead, Suffolk, England, in 1827. A young woman, Maria Marten, was shot dead by her lover, William Corder. The two had arranged to meet at the Red Barn, a local landmark, before eloping to Ipswich. Maria was never heard from again. Corder fled the scene and, although he sent Marten's family letters claiming she was in good health, her body was later discovered buried in the barn after her stepmother spoke of having dreamt about the murder. Corder was tracked down in London, where he had married and started a new life. He was brought back to Suffolk, and after a well-publicised trial, found guilty of murder. He was hanged in Bury St Edmunds in 1828; a huge crowd witnessed Corder's execution. The story provoked numerous articles in the newspapers, and songs and plays. The village where the crime had taken place became a tourist attraction and the barn was stripped by souvenir hunters. The plays and ballads remained popular throughout the next century and continue to be performed today.
