Sometimes the second chapter of an artist's career eclipses the first chapter completely. That can mean that fabulous early work is difficult, if not impossible, to find. Embers and Ashes caught the ear of Miles Davis, who insisted that Horn open for him at The Village Vanguard, a gig that put Horn on the jazz-lover's map. Shirley Horn's later career, with multiple albums, Grammy nominations and awards, and recognition from the National Endowment For The Arts and the U.S. Congress is well known. But for years, her very first recording, with its exciting intimations of the voice and style to come, was lost as though it had never been. (Katie)
