SHIRLEY KENT
Shirley Kent came from Birmingham. In the late sixties she joined the progressive rock outfit Ghost but left the band in the early seventies to revert to a solo career, again securing a residency at Birmingham's Opposite Lock club. The Fresh Out album was recorded under a pseudonym, Virginia Tree. Apart from a cover of Jimmy Dorsey's I'm Glad There Is You, the remaining nine songs were self-penned and former Ghost members Paul Eastment and Terry Guy joined her on three of the tracks:- Let Us Go Dancing, Hiding There, and Harlequin and Columbine. Many of the songs were very folky with Make Believe Girl and In My Garden among the best. Only 1,000 copies were pressed and it soon became a collector's item. It was later reissued on Magic Spell in 1988 with a new title and two extra tracks, A Dedication To Betram George Tipping, My Dad and an orchestrated version of In My Garden...(Tapestry of Delights)
