·      SHIRLEY AND LEE – LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL - ULTRA-RARE 1958 SCORE MONO LP 4023; A REPRESSING WITH A DIFFERENT COVER AND CATALOG NUMBER OF THE MONSTROUSLY RARE ORIGINAL 1956 RELEASE (NOTE: THIS IS NOT A 1961 RE-RECORDED COMPILATION ON WARWICK LABEL WITH A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COVER)

·      GENUINE  U.S. PRESSING

·      SHIRLEY & LEE'S 'LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL' ON ALADDIN LABEL IS EASILY ONE OF THE TOP-50 RAREST ROCK ALBUMS IN EXISTENCE, WITH NEAR MINT COPIES (PRACTICALLY UNKNOWN TO EXIST) EXCHANGING HANDS FOR LOW 4-DIGIT FIGURES; THIS REPRESSING FROM 1958 ON ALADDIN'S SHORT-LIVED SUCCESSOR LABEL (SCORE) IS ONLY MARGINALLY MORE COMMON: THIS IS ONLY THE THIRD SCORE COPY WE HAVE SEEN IN MORE THAN HALF A CENTURY OF COLLECTING, AND IS BY FAR THE BEST PRESERVED COPY (SOME ISSUES WITH THE SLEEVE NOTWITHSTANDING)

·      PLEASE NOTE: ALTHOUGH THIS IS TECHNICALLY A REPRESSING OF AN EARLIER ALADDIN TITLE WITH A NEW COVER AND CATALOG NUMBER, THE HAND-ETCHED MATRICES IN THE TRAIL-OFF VINYL CLEARLY SHOW THE ORIGINAL ALADDIN CATALOG NUMBER 807, MEANING THAT THIS DISC WAS PRESSED FROM THE ORIGINAL 1956 ALADDIN STAMPERS (OR, MORE LIKELY, THAT SCORE SIMPLY "RECYCLED" UNUSED ALADDIN COPIES AND SIMPLY AFFIXED THE NEW (SCORE) LABELS ON THEM. FOR ALL PRACTICAL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, THIS IS THE FIRST PRESSING OF THIS TITLE, ALBEIT WITH A DIFFERENT LABEL ATTACHED.

·      ORIGINAL MAROON (DARK RED), NON-GLOSSY, SCORE LABEL WITH SILVER PRINT

·      DEEP GROOVE PRESSING

·      THIS IS NOT AN IMPORT, RECORD CLUB RELEASE OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·      CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

·      THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING

·      As far as we know, this album has NEVER been available on legitimate Compact Disc or in any other way, manner or format.

(PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVER, LABEL OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

(Note: this is a REAL image of the ACTUAL item you are bidding on. This is NOT a "recycled" image from our previous auction. What you see is what you'll get.  GUARANTEED!)

Shirley and Lee "Let the Good Times Roll" LP (Aladdin 807 Mono (1956) / Score 4023 (1958). The title track is one of the classics from Rock 'n Roll's early days, and the lone album they did for Aladdin is one of the prizes for collectors, particularly if you can locate a copy in this condition.

***

Shirley Goodman and Leonard Lee, born just ten days apart in 1936, scored three massive R&B hits before either one of them were both 20 years old: "Feel So Good," "Let the Good Times Roll," and "I Feel Good" were all written by the talented young couple.

They had one trait in common among their recordings; this New Orleans-based duo almost never sang in harmony, let alone together at all. Their contrasting male-female duet style was later influential on early ska and reggae productions from Jamaica. Shirley & Lee recorded extensively for Eddie Messner and Leo Messner's L.A.-based Aladdin label. The Messners -- along with former NBC radio exec. Lew Chudd's Imperial Records and Art Rupe's Specialty -- seemed to have a knack for signing talent straight out of the Crescent City.

·      CONDITION:

·      THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD (VG).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split by indeterminable lengths on the top seam and spine and about 3" on the bottom seam); the top seam and spine have been taped by a particularly bothersome 1" wide postal paper packaging tape, which cannot be removed (we tried); please see the images to get the idea.

-       Visible shelf wear noted on all three seams (the sections that are not covered by the tape)

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-       Minor yellowish stain noted at the bottom of the back panel (less than 1¼ square inch in size)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER

POSTAGE & SHIPPING:

We offer three postage rates for domestic orders: USPS Media Mail, USPS Priority Mail and USPS Express Mail and three rates for international shipments:  USPS First Class, USPS Priority International Mail, and USPS Express International Mail (in a small number of cases, we will, at our discretion and for purely technical reasons, substitute First Class Mail with eBay's Global Shipping, which is fundamentally the same service at about the same cost). INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOTE: WE RECOMMEND (BUT DO NOT INSIST) that you select USPS International Priority Mail when making a payment.

INTERNATIONAL POSTAGE rates vary from one region of  the world to another. For SPECIFIC international and domestic postage rates, please click on " Shipping, returns, and payments" tab in the header of our listing.
