Original Dutch pressing on the Pink Elephant label. Record and sleeve are in excellent condition.
With all of the major rock and roll bands of both the past and today mainly coming from America and England, there is a tendency to overlook the bands that have come from other countries. One such example is the Dutch band Shocking Blue. Essentially, these guys were hold-over hippies that were making the music of the sixties long after that decade had ended. While the band scored only a single big hit in America, in various European nations they were very big.
It's tough to describe the music of Shocking Blue, because there's really nothing else out there like them, in the seventies. As I previously stated, it's as if the group attempted to prevent the sixties psychedelic pop-rock scene from dying. Rather obviously, their attempt to do this failed, but during their reign they did become fairly popular in nations across Europe. The group's first big and only noteworthy American hit, Venus, can be found on this album (the group's music would get a long overdue revival in America when eighties pop group Bananarama would cover the song, and score a huge hit with it.) There's really nothing else like Shocking Blue - and depending on who you are and what your tastes in music are, that can be either very good or very bad.
In the end, I would have to say that Shocking Blue's music is pretty damn good. Sure, it's not for everyone (not everybody likes hippie music), but if you're into sixties-style psychedelic pop-rock, you're going to get a real kick out of their music. If you like this sort of thing, the group's albums are not to be missed.
