I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS RECORD HIGHLY ENOUGH: It's another pair of mind-boggling masterpieces by DUKE ELLINGTON AND HIS COTTON CLUB ORCHESTRA.
"SHOUT 'EM AUNT TILLIE" and "COTTON CLUB STOMP" are simply two of the best sides by Duke during this period. "Tillie" is a sinuous, medium-tempo piece which successfully gets under your skin and stays there; "Cotton Club" is an astonishing, kaleidoscopic romp that absolutely will leave you howling at the moon. I say again, you can't go wrong with this one.
Of course, all the usual suspects are on hand: COOTIE WILLIAMS (trumpet), JOHNNY HODGES (alto sax), HARRY CARNEY (baritone sax), BARNEY BIGARD (clarinet), TRICKY SAM NANTON (trombone), WELLMAN BRAUD (slap bass), SONNY GREER (drums) - DUKE ELLINGTON (piano) - and I could go on.
This 1939 Bluebird reissue of 1929 and 1930 sides is in spiffy E condition, and is immaculately master pressed on VERY quiet shellac!
