Lev Sibiryakov, bass
Lev Sibiryakov (Leopoldo Spivacchini) (Bass) (Polonnoe, province of Khmelnitskaya, Ukraine 1869 - Warsaw, Poland 1938)
His real name was Spivak Leib. In Odessa Sibiryakov married the daughter of theatrical figure Sibiryakov. He studied with Fiorini in Odessa. Here he made his opera debut. Then he went to Italy where he took lessons from Cesare Rossi. In 1895 Sibiryakov made his italian debut. At the invitation of the famous conductor Arturo Toscanini Sibiryakov, adopting the stage nameLeopoldo Spivacchini, started to appear at La Scala in Milan where he performed with great success from 1897 to 1900. In Italy he also sang in other famous opera stages (Teatro San Carlo, Naples). Later he appeared in Tbilisi, Kharkov, Kiev and Baku. From 1902 to 1904 and from 1909 to 1921 he was a soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. From 1902 to 1903 he also sang at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Guest appearances followed in Riga (1910), Boston (1910-11), London (Covent Garden, 1911), Berlin (1912), Paris (1921), Brussels (1938), Monte Carlo (1932). Since 1921 Sibiryakov lived in Poland, where later he taught at the Warsaw Conservatory. Sibiryakov possessed equal in all registers, powerful and well processed voice of a soft timbre. He was a master of mezza-voce singing. Contemporaries compared his voice to a sound of a violoncello
