Description
This handwritten letter (ALS), was written by Eugene Ormandy on December 9, 1960, addressed to Efrem Zimbalist, Sr, whose piano concerto (E Flat) Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra had recently performed (by pianist Lee Luvisi) and recorded for air-check from a performance on December 4, 1960; not commercially released. Included also is the handwritten envelope that contained the letter. Both the envelope and letter are used from the stationary of Ormandy's Philadelphia address of the time: The Bellevue-Stratford. Here is the text of the letter: "Dear Efrem, Here is the record I had made for you from Luvisi's performance over the air. I hope it will give you a little pleasure to listen to it. It gave us much pleasure to prepare and perform it. Please forgive me for also mentioning the appearance of Efrem, Jr. at the Academy Anniversary Concert on January 21. I did so only because I am convinced that he would be the ideal person to speak the famous words of Lincoln in Copland's fine composition at the beginnning of our celebration of the Anniversary of the Civil War. Our love to you and Mary -- always in sincere friendship, Yours, Eugene." At the time, Zimbalist was director of the Curtis Institute. The reference to Mary, is of course, Mary Curtis Bok, the founder of the Curtis Institute. The records consist of the following: The 12" 33 rpm record of the performance that Ormandy mentions; and also two 10" 33 rpm records (3 sides) of what sounds like a sonata for 2 pianos--it could also be a transcription--Ruth Meckler is listed on the label as the 2nd piano, above that is the title: Concerto in E flat for piano orchestra, but you just hear the two pianos. The records and stationary are self-authenticating, but I will guarantee the authenticity of all of these items. To my knowledge, there is no known commercial recording of this concerto. $4.00 media mail, $19.00 air mail to Europe, $21.00 air mail to rest of the world, $11.00 surface and Canada.
