"What is the Reason," and b/w "Ode to Carrabassett Fats." See below for more information on this group. Released 1967 on small Bath, Maine label. Condition: Record is mint, and comes directly from a recording studio archive in Lewiston, Maine.
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SIGNIFICANT OTHER: This is the only known release by this talented all-girl band from Maine. "What is the Reason" is a cover vocal of a Young Rascals tune written by Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati. It offers up some decent harmonies in typical 60s girl group fashion. Side two offers an unexpected jam-session instrumental titled "Ode to Carrabassett Fats" with power guitar and organ. It was a tribute to the owner of the Red Stallion at Sugarloaf Mountain where the group frequently played in the winters. There were four members in this band. Shirley Dillon played rhythm guitar and sang lead. Bonnie Holmes played keyboards and was the original singer for about the first six months. Diane Withee played bass and Pam Withee played the drums. The band was managed at one time by Carl Strube who owned Critique Records, and was based in Cumberland, Maine because both Pam and Shirley were still in high school when the band formed. They frequently played Mertic's restaurant on Swans Island. Both Bonnie Holmes and Pam Withee are from Swans Island. The Significant Other played all over Maine and New Hampshire. In the summer they played in New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Later in 1969 the band recorded in Nashville, and opened for a number of acts such as the Ohio Express, 1910 Fruitgum Company, Vanilla Fudge, and Strawberry Alarm Clock.
