Label/Format: CBS – early original intense orange format with one of the two sides textured. Both have the original 33 speed indicators, later quickly changed to 33 1/3 (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with moderate spindle marks, a few on side one being a little longer, but quite fine so showing little with normal viewing. Less in number on side two.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very good solid weight.

Rarity: Original monos are quite hard to find. 33 speed indicator labels and this includes the flipbacked Dawson Rossiter (of London) cover, this in superb condition.

Brief Info: The third S&G album and an absolute masterpiece. A wonderful set, if a little short – the UK version has one less song than the US version – but not a wasted second. This is vocal harmony and stunning songs at their ver best – it was THE album that really got them noticed here. Almost incredibly, this is my very first mono original and a very nice copy too. It appears played a few times going by the spindle marks, but the mono sound is very impressive – a brief few ticks on the final song but not a great deal else. All the vocals and backing are all sharp and focused and devoid of wear or distortion. So the odd gentle reminder of what is being listened too – a 47-year-old record – but I had few qualms with this quite elusive vintage record. The cover is superb and quite exceptional. A strong all-round example that will please many collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the closed edges and ends atop three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Dawson Rossiter and includes the more heavy-duty polylined white inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: A really beautiful looking vintage cover that is made with thicker, more robust card than many of the more familiar cover manufacturers of the time. The laminate retains a very fine shine, clarity and freshness with no lifting and any creases, very few, small and fine. A little gentle dulling is seen under angled light, having dark artwork makes this revealing, but this reveals little, the graphic looks gorgeous with hardly anything detracting, this has withstood the test-of-time very well indeed.

Cover Back: If the front shows little wear, the back is at very least it’s equal. Being white, matt and unprotected, this shows minimal traces of any darkening or ageing. Any discolouration or toning traces are very light and gentle indeed, just the merest hint to remind of it’s impressive age. Barely any rubbing or creasing and all three flipbacks look impressive. These all solid with clean ends with minimal traces of any end burring. Any back of this format and age seldom age a great deal better.

Top Edge: Solid, straight and still mostly all smooth to the fingertip.

Bottom Edge: Incredible, practically as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed, the fine exposed strip on the front ultra clean with no chipping, fading or discolouration.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, centred a tiny fraction low being somewhat critical. All still fully laminated with no peeling and still ultra smooth to the touch.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and all retain excellent or even better shape with no dinks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic piece of 60s pop history, this cover will prove very difficult to find better. It’s beauty and early manufacture should please many collectors from this classic period.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white heavy-duty polylined cover. It has barely any real wear and marked down a little for natural darkening/gentle ageing. The lining crystal clear as seen through two pristine window circles and hardly any creasing or edge splits (or repairs). This is UK patended with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: and arguably better for a mono record this great age. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. I feel the spindle marks could be misleading on this one. Record players from this time usually meant hole to spindle location done via the label. Thus several spindle marks could and were inflicted with just one play. I know this to be true because my parents had a radiogram with a pull-down front making hole location – to say the least, difficult. So the label was placed on top of the spindle and moved around until the hole aligned and the record dropped down. The record’s surfaces have only light surface marks seen under angled light. The odd tiny blemish omits a few sporadic clicks, a brief few on the final song as mentioned above. So not perfect, but still a fantastic record with the sound being clean and focused. and importantly, distortion and wear-free. Visually a very fine mono record that should please many collectors, but not the highly discerning.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality and durable CBS record plays for most even above it’s spendid visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are quite minimal and just a small few sporadic clicks are mentioned above – these very few indeed. Few available copies will outperform this early mono pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. It almost seems unfair to critically analyse a mono record this great age when being played on such a revealing stereo turntable. The Linn LP12 was made for stereo reproduction and is ruthlessly revealing. But this record gave a lovely account of itself, not perfect but many fans and collectors will enjoy it. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended if the odd brief and mainly light blemishes is acceptable.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
