Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and incredibly attractive with only two or three light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. To unusual to see a CBS album on these colour labels, as all will know, orange was the colour of the day for this major label.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 160 grams. This a massive weight for a CBS record.

Brief Info: The Graduate was a very popular film of the late 60s, it starred a young Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. This album has songs from the soundtrack, featuring wonderful songs from the folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel. Based on that fact, it sold well peaking at No 3 in the UK album chart. This is a wonderful mono record, a first issue and hardly even played – one massively pressed and offering quite stunning sound quality. A lovely laminated cover too.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front laminate, this wraps around the top and bottom edges, but not the spine, hence this is vulnerable. The back is matt and totally unprotected with a smooth finish. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day and includes the ‘Patent Pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a lovely shine, freshness and clarity and is fully adhered with barely any hint of dulling, even under light. Three half moon surface creases away from the edges and a only a modest few there. One of the most famous film covers of all time and finding one a great deal better will prove difficult.

Cover Back: The very vulnerable back which is unprotected is in superb condition with minimal traces of any grubbiness or marks – any minor surface traces only seen under light – and barely any creases at all. Few backs of this age survive quite this nice and the lack of ring wear always a bonus, especially with a massive 160 gram record inside for 44 years or so.

Top Edge: Nigh-on perfect, super smooth, unscuffed and fully laminated. Quite straight oo.

Bottom Edge: Almost the same again, with just a small tip rub on the left corner.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear, any thickening or burring tiny and faint. Record enters on this edg that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A super spine, this against the odds being quite thin and unlaminated. Solid, straight with any compression mildly light. The fragile text is practically perfect and unworn and the white surface shows minimal darkening.

Corners: A light rub on the bottom left, little else. All retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this vintage late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain solid white unlined inner with little to fault bar a couple of press marks. Clean, fresh, unsplit or creased.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and a heavyweight pressing. One of the heaviest CBS records I have ever held and this is an impressive mono record. For those who chose the mono format when it was gradually being overtaken by the stereo mode, most played them on mono record players, hence they were more vulnerable to more basic stylus and vast tracking weights. So few will be found much better than this. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light – mostly fine hairlines or minor whispy surface traces. There are NO penetrating scratches on this record. Visually a super example that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This mono heavyweight plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is immense with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. One unruined by excessive usage or blunt piledriver stylus, all the complex vocals and intense jazzy instrumentals are precise, focused and have an incredible sonic delivery in the mono format. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no irritating cutting or pressing noises, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, my first mono example ever and it failed to disappoint. This iconic movie soundtrack, that includes plenty of Simon & Garfunkel, will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
