A foundational monument in the history of American roots music, this landmark UK Brunswick pressing captures the legendary pairing of Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Madame Marie Knight. Recorded in late 1947 and released in 1948, "Up Above My Head" is a masterclass in vocal call-and-response, propelled by Tharpe's blistering, syncopated electric guitar work and the driving rhythm section of Decca's house pianist Sammy Price.
​The record's joyful syncopation and infectious swing bridged the gap between traditional church music and modern secular styles, proving immensely influential on the emerging rock and roll pioneers of the 1950s.
